World Oceans Day - Movie Night & Discussion

Corals are the nursery for all life in the oceans, a remarkable ecosystem that provides a habitat for 25% of all marine life. Yet, with increasing temperature and carbon emissions warming the seas, coral bleaching – which means coral death – has been accelerating worldwide, and most people have no idea of the implication of the catastrophe silently raging underwater. Climate change is the leading cause of coral bleaching. Coral bleaching impacts peoples’ livelihoods, food security, and safety. Reefs act as natural barriers that absorb the force of waves and storms to keep coastal cities safe. Without them, we must rely on man-made walls and barriers that are expensive and less effective. The Red Sea tourism brings in millions of Egyptian pounds each year and supports thousands of jobs in Egypt. Bleached coral reefs risk it all. Alarm rings? Do you feel we are threatened? Do you wonder how we could save corals? If you want to know the answer and learn more, join our next “Movie Night” for film screening of "Chasing Coral" held this *Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 7:10 pm * And let us have some important Climate Talks. The film depicts what is happening below the surface of our seas and oceans. Following the film, three panelists specializing in marine life will discuss their perspectives on what the future holds for the precious coral ecosystems and reflect on our national reefs treasure in the Red Sea. Chasing Corals screening and discussion are free and open to Mermates family. Language of the film: English with Arabic subtitles Language of the discussion: Arabic and English The number of participants is limited.
