The marine iguana may not be famous for its beauty, but it is well known throughout the world for its unique ability to swim underwater. Distinguished ecological adaptations are common amongst many species found in the Galápagos Islands, making this area a wildlife lover’s dream. This species of iguana is only found on the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador. They spend the day basking in the sun along the rocky shoreline and swimming in the sea to forage on algae.
Also known as the sea iguana or saltwater iguana, these unique reptiles are a threatened species. Even though they are locally abundant, marine iguanas remain a protected species due to its incredibly small geographic distribution. Found on nearly every island of the Galápagos archipelago, these ocean swimmers vary in appearance between the different islands, taking on unique coloration, shape, and sizes. There is nothing wilder then seeing a marine iguana swim alongside you while diving. Diving with marine iguanas is one of the most unique experiences you will ever have.
